Bathing an OI Baby

Bathing a baby with severe OI can be tricky.  Babies are slippery when wet!

For Isaiah's first few months, we gave him sponge baths.  That was a personal decision and it was made because he was on a constant breathing machine.  Our beginning transitions of switching to a baby tub can be seen here.  Isaiah continues to use this tub today.

A simple baby bath sponge cushion is helpful.

Check out the Leacho bath products.  Seriously, any one of them is fantastic for a baby/toddler with OI.

One support that is very successful with many OIers is the Leacho Hug Tub.  It seems to really grow with the child.

It's a great pillow to recline your baby on in the beginning and becomes a support to go around your baby when he/she has the ability to sit up.  We don't have it for Isaiah because we found success with the tub we were given from friends and because we don't have a window in our full bathroom and I read that it mildews if not aired out well.  But I wanted it once I heard about all of the success stories. ;-)

Another mom loved the Summer Infant- Newborn-to-Toddler Portable Folding Bathtub.  It has a inflatable vinyl liner that supports your baby and gives them the ability to sit on an incline.

We have an older version of this tub, the Summer Infant Right Height Bath Tub.

Ours has a mesh pad that attaches to the chair (it looks like they've change that attachment).  Isaiah is almost a year and a half, and I still use this tub.  Once he has great torso/head support, we'll switch him to a Leacho support.

A suggestion offered for kids with good head support is the inflatable ducky tub made by Munchkin.
It fits in the standard bath tub, it's lots of fun, and saves on water. :)  Plus, the inflatable sides are much safer than a typical hard tub.

Another suggestion that is helpful when your child will be in a spica cast is a portable hair wash basin.
