On the Go

Traveling with a baby with severe OI can be intimidating.

In the beginning, it may be suggested to you that you get a car bed.  When we had Isaiah, there were two types available.  The hospital only had the smaller size, which didn't work for us because of his length...but luckily I had done some research and knew of another hospital that did carry the larger size.

My best advice on this is to wait to get a car seat until you know the severity of your child's OI.

But if you must get a car seat, here are some infant car seats recommended by other OI moms.

The Omni-
The Omni is a whole system that also involves a stroller it connects to; a stroller is also a bassinet- which is AMAZING for strolling with our OI babies in the beginning.  The car seat itself allows the baby to sit higher than other infant car seats, the bucket isn't too deep which is perfect.

Other than that, the decision is up to you.  Avoid a bucket seat that is too deep; it makes it difficult to get the baby out safely.  We have a Graco Snugride Click Connect.  I like it but I don't love it.  It was tough to learn how to get Isaiah in and out safely.  Using the Snuggin Go (see bottom of page) helped A LOT.

Here are the recommended convertible car seats:

The Orbit Baby- it's pricey but it has a base (that comes separately) that rotates!  The head and neck supports are fully adjustable.  This is the seat that we have for once Isaiah reaches 15 pounds.

The Britax Hippo- this is recommended if you know spicas are in your future.

The Safety 1st 65 Sport Convertible Car Seat- This is super affordable and comes highly recommended.  The head and neck supports are fully adjustable.

The Maxi-Cosi Pria 70- this sucker reclines and is not too deep of a seat.  In terms of the head cushion, you can remove some of the padding if you have a child with a larger head to give them more room.

The Clek convertible carseat is another recommended seat among OI parents.  It's not as padded and is a deep seat but comfy.  It has high safety ratings and is smaller/more compact as compared to some of the larger seats out there.

Another recommendation that many OI parents have is to get a Snuggin Go Infant Positioner.
We use ours in Isaiah's stroller, car seat, bouncey chairs....even on the bed at the hospital when Isaiah gets his treatment.

Speaking of strollers, avoid umbrella strollers.  They don't offer the support your little one will need.
